Dogon villages (about 250 000 people) situated on a large plateau. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture.

Dogon art is versatile and use some types of masks and figures.

The most famous of these mask is for example the Kanaga mask or Dyodyomini - bird mask.

The Dogon art influence with Niongom and Tellem tradions. The Tellem people carved abstract figures which were regulalry sprinkled with chicken blood and eggs and were later burried with their owners.
The blood patina mineralized over the centuries which accounts for the present condition of the statues.
